Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop finished observational drawings for a range of art, craft and design purposes.
It applies to individuals working in any area of visual communication and design who use observational drawing skills in their work. They possess well-developed manual observational drawing techniques, but may also use digital tools to produce drawings.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENT | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Develop and refine observational drawing technique | 1.1 Investigate specific techniques and considerations for observational drawing 1.2 Establish and follow safe work practices for selected technique 1.3 Explore ways to achieve perspective in drawings 1.4 Experiment with use of lines and edges 1.5 Consider ways to recognise and accurately represent space 1.6 Work with different techniques to observe and depict light and shade 1.7 Identify problems in own drawing technique and explore ways to resolve them |
2. Explore media and tools for observational drawings | 2.1 Research historical and contemporary observational drawing in the context of own work 2.2 Determine how different media and tools can create different effects in drawings 2.3 Select and use appropriate media to achieve the desired outcome |
3. Produce finished observational drawings | 3.1 Select subjects for observational drawing projects based on the needs of own work 3.2 Confirm key objectives for the drawing project 3.3 Create finished drawings that show command of observational drawing techniques and appropriate selection of media 3.4 Evaluate own observational drawing in terms of key objectives 3.5 Seek critical feedback from others 3.6 Reflect and act on the need for further development of skills |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
produce a body of observational drawings that show well-developed technique using accurate perspective and effective depiction of light, shade and space
select media and tools to suit the needs of a particular drawing project
use self-evaluation and feedback from others to identify and pursue further skill development.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
explain the role of observational drawing in different types of professional practice
identify and explain techniques used in observational drawing
explain the work health and safety considerations for drawing.
identify and explain how tools, media and techniques can be used to achieve particular effects in observational drawings
summarise aspects of historical and contemporary observational drawing relevant to own practice.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:
information sources
drawing materials and equipment
interaction with relevant people.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
Foundation Skills
This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
Skill | Performance Criteria | Description |
Learning | 3.6 | Identifies own skill needs and may initiate a learning strategy to improve work performance |
Reading | 2.1 | Analyses extensive visual and textual material to identify content relevant to own work production |
Oral communication | 3.5 | Uses detailed and clear language to elicit feedback from others |
Navigate the world of work | 1.2 | Takes responsibility for implementation of safe work practices for specific drawing techniques |
Interact with others | 3.5 | Seeks feedback from others and considers its value to the improvement of future work performance |
Get the work done | 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 | Takes a systematic approach to development and refinement of drawing techniques using practice and experimentation Determines problem solving methods to improve drawing techniques Uses research outcomes to inform decisions about media and tools to achieve required effects Plans production of finished drawings including decisions about subject matter, objectives, media and technique Assesses final work for success in meeting objectives |
Range Statement
This section specifies different work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included.
Specific techniques and considerations must include: | accurate perception of shape approaches to line and edges approaches to perspective coordination of hand and eye depiction of light and shade representation of space. |
